The Saadian tombs are sepulchres which date to the time of the Saadian dynasty (1578-1603). They were discovered in 1917 and contain the remains of approximately sixty members of the dynasty.

You can see the older, original wall that surrounded the tombs. They were refurbished after their discovery, and so now look newer.
The tombs had been buried to protect them from looters. You can see how high up the soil was on these ancient palms.

The Koutoubia Mosque is the symbol of Marrakesh. No building can be built taller than its minaret (253 ft). It was built in the late 12th century. The original mosque (you can see the columns in the photo below to the left) was built earlier in the century and was thought to be slightly out of alignment with Mecca, so the second was built.
