Fes-the A-mazing Medina

Still on day 3!  This afternoon we take our soggy selves to Fes, imperial city numerous times since its founding in the 8th-9th century, but was most recently the capital until the French moved it to Rabat in 1912.  Fez is the second largest city after Casablanca with over 1 million people, and we stayed in a riad (former villa with a central garden courtyard) in the outer edges of its vast warren-like medina.  The alleyways of Fes are such a narrow maze that Gate 1 keeps us on a tight leash to avoid losing someone!

 In the photo above and below you can see the wall surrounding the medina.  It continues all the way up the hilltop!

This is a close-up of the Medersa (religious school) Bouanania.  Note the green tiles, as it is also a mosque.
